Rugby Portobello Trust

The grant recipient

The Rugby Portobello Trust is a registered charity based in West London. It works with young people from the most deprived areas of local boroughs and offers a range of programmes aimed at tackling homelessness, exclusion and poverty.

Walmer Road School

What it aims to do

Walmer Road School was set up by the Rugby Portobello Trust in 2005 to provide full-time alternative education for 14-16 year olds who have withdrawn from mainstream education, have been excluded or who are at risk of this happening. It aims to ensure that students

  • complete their compulsory education
  • achieve qualifications
  • continue into further education or training

How it works

The school is run from a brand new centre in North Kensington where a small number of students are admitted each year to study GCSEs and equivalent level awards. Teaching is provided by the headteacher and part time specialist teachers.

Results

Walmer Road School will use GCSE results and Personal Development Awards to help monitor and evaluate the progress made by students.

  • All ten Year 11 students who completed the year are now in employment, education or training.
  • GCSE results are available for the 10 eligible students. Six gained two or more GCSE passes, including English and maths.

The funding

SHINE has made a grant to contribute to the running costs of Walmer Road School. Other funding is provided by trusts, the local education authority and schools.

Funding: £60,000 to the Rugby Portobello Trust, over three years (2007-2009)
