Big Desk, Little Desk

SHINE’s Big Desk, Little Desk initiative gives companies who are interested in our work the chance to visit one of the projects we fund and see for themselves the work that we deliver on the ground.
The initial idea came from feedback we received from corporate social responsibility professionals, who told us that their organisations wanted to fund educational programmes but that, for various reasons, they found it difficult to gain access to state schools to learn first hand about the issues involved. This initiative gives them exactly what they asked for: the chance to swap their big desk in their busy office for a little desk in a noisy classroom.
Small is beautiful
To reduce the administrative burden on the projects involved and minimise any disruption during the visits themselves, the visits are deliberately small in scale. The first event was held in 2006 at Millfields Community School in Hackney; at the second, held later that year, representatives from eight organisations visited SHINE on Saturday @ Wendell Park Primary School in Hammersmith.
Our 2007 visit took place in Tower Hamlets. We invited our delegates to Central Foundation Girls' School where they met some of the girls taking part in our Serious Fun on Saturdays programme. The visit was co-hosted by Andrea Sullivan, Head of Corporate Philanthropy Europe and Middle East, Lehman Brothers.
If you would like to participate in one of our future events, please ring the SHINE office on 020 8393 1880.
"I really enjoyed it because it's something I don't get to do as much as I used to, which is a shame. The kids were great - apart from the one making faces at me! Little tyke!"
