Andrew's story
Having lived in several different foster homes since he was two, Andrew has had a tough life for a seven year old. He was confused, often unhappy and sometimes unable to control his emotions. His difficult behaviour at school had stopped him from progressing as well as he should. When he was assessed for Every Child A Reader, he achieved low scores, could write only four words and needed help to read even the simplest of sentences, such as ‘Mum is cooking’.
After a shaky start, he settled into the programme and became focused and engaged. After just a few weeks, Andrew was enjoying much more complicated stories; he should soon be working at the same level as his classmates and will probably achieve the expected level for his age in the national reading tests at the end of the year. His new attitude to school has carried through to the classroom and his other subjects; as a result, his future now looks much brighter.
