SHINE on Windsor

On one Sunday each September, thousands of people hit Windsor Great Park to raise money for charity, or just to have a fun day out with their families and friends.
Sadly the Windsor Half Marathon could not take place in 2007 because of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease ... but that did not stop the SHINE runners - who signed up for another half marathon, that same day, so that they could still run for SHINE! And a great run it was too, with many personal bests and people running this distance for the first time posting very impressive times.
This year, we are back at Windsor - Windsor Half Marathon - for the 2008 event. Like the children we support through our projects, the SHINE half marathon runners have a proud tradition of training, improvement and achievement. But don’t worry: athletes of all abilities have taken part in the past and we warmly welcome new faces for the future. All you need is enthusiasm!
So whether you prefer short (or longer) distances, why not go the extra mile for SHINE and join our team? Give us a call, and we will tell you how to make every mile count.
Case study: Marathon Man
Richard Crosby, a long-standing friend of SHINE, explains how and why he supports our work.
“I know some of the people who set up SHINE, so I’ve been a supporter from its earliest days, taking a table at the first Benefit Dinner and every one since then. In the last couple of years, I’ve joined the SHINE on Windsor team to run the half-marathon. My time last September was actually a little slower than the year before, which was a bit disappointing, but it’s great fun – a really good day out."
“I like the way that SHINE’s focus is clearly defined: it knows what it wants to do and where, it funds projects that make a real difference at a local level and that appeals to me. And my own background is not dissimilar to those of the children SHINE helps, so the idea of giving disadvantaged kids a helping hand through education has always really appealed to me. I know there are lots of bright kids around today who aren’t getting the opportunities I had: in this regard, I think it’s more difficult now than it was when I was growing up, so I think SHINE is exemplary for giving them a good leg up and I’m happy to do more to help in the future.”
