SHINE funds programmes that seek to increase the academic attainment of particularly vulnerable children or young people. These include children in care, the children of refugees and young people excluded, or at risk of exclusion, from school. A wealth of research demonstrates that these groups are more likely to leave school without five good GCSEs, placing them at far greater risk of unemployment, ill health, homelessness and prison.

SHINE's special focus projects vary enormously in scale, approach and target group. But they all work to provide a learning environment that takes account of individual needs, issues and circumstances in order to give vulnerable children and young people the best chance of fulfilling their academic potential before they leave full time education.
