Despite the best efforts of teachers and local authorities, it remains the case that too few young people from low income families apply to university. For example, in total almost 50% of young people are now going to university. For teenagers from the poorest 25% of families, however, the figure is less than 20%.
At its heart, SHINE exists to enable children from low income families to fulfil their academic potential. As a result, we are naturally keen to help stretch gifted students from poor backgrounds and encourage them to raise their game and broaden their horizons. That way, we hope to help many more achieve the grades they need and take their education all the way.
