Serious Fun on Saturdays @ Hampton School
The grant recipient
Hampton is a large independent day school in West London and has a healthy track record of working with charities and the local community. Pupils at nearby state schools come from a variety of social and economic backgrounds including areas where there are significant pockets of deprivation.
The programme
- 14 Saturday morning sessions during the year, including maths, English, critical thinking, design & technology and science
- for 30 boys in year 5 (9-10 year olds) from four local state primaries
- sessions are taught by specialists and supported by sixth formers from the independent sector
- the purpose is to enrich learning and to encourage students to be academically ambitious
Latest results
- average attendance was 93%
- informal assessments suggested that most boys improved in maths
- the majority of boys felt the programme increased their confidence and interest in maths and english
The funding and sustainability
Hampton school has now committed to funding this programme. A three-year continuation grant has been awarded to provide additional opportunities for boys who have attended the programme and who show exceptional promise in maths.
