Serious Fun on Saturdays @ City of London School for Girls
The grant recipient

City of London School for Girls is located in London’s 'Square Mile', along with some of the richest concentrations of economic business in the world but its neighbours include some of the UK's most deprived communities. Hackney and Tower Hamlets are among the most deprived boroughs in England, and Islington is among the 10% most deprived. Many of the children from these areas face significant social, economic and educational challenges.
The programme
- 10 day sessions during the year and a weekend residential course
- for 60 gifted students from years 9 and 10 from four secondary schools in Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets
- sessions are taught by teachers from the independent and state sectors
- it aims to develop critical thinking skills
Latest results for Year 8
- in English 40% of students are working at least two years above their expected level; in maths this percentage rises to 72%
Latest results for Year 10
- in English and maths 94% were expected to reach A-C grades
- in maths 50% were expected to be awarded A grades and 13% A* grades
The funding
SHINE is delighted to be funding the running costs for this project in partnership with the Lehman Brothers Foundation Europe (http://www.lehman.com/who/philanthropy/) . Additional funding and in-kind support comes from the participating schools and other private trusts.
