The London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is home to one of the top independent schools in the country (Latymer Upper School) and has another on its door step (St Paul’s, Barnes). However, it is also the 12th most disadvantaged borough in London with nearly half of all households on an annual income of less than £10,000.

The programme

  • Saturday morning sessions during the spring term and follow up activities at the end of the summer term
  • for up to 80 year 6 students from 14 primary schools in Richmond and Hammersmith and Fulham
  • students are of mixed abilities: some are gifted and others are struggling
  • sessions are taught by teachers from the independent schools and cover a range of topics

Latest results

  • 94% of students achieved KS2 SATs scores that were at or above their teachers’ predictions in English, maths and science
  • the percentage of students achieving level 5 was higher for the SHINE cohort than the borough results
  • additional funding has been secured to continue the project for a further two years

The funding

SHINE has made a grant for set up and running costs. Further funding and in-kind support comes from the borough and the participating independent schools.

Funding: £51,249, to Hammersmith and Fulham LEA, over three years (2003-06)
