SHINE ON SATURDAY @ BARCLAY PRIMARY SCHOOL
The grant recipient
Barclay Primary School is in Leyton in Waltham Forest. It is a four form entry primary school which serves a diverse community. 67% of the students speak English as an Additional Language and 96% come from an ethnic minority. Baseline data shows that the majority of students enter the school significantly behind age related expectations. The school is deeply committed to its students' academic success, with one of the highest attendances in the borough at 96%.
The programme
The SHINE on Saturday programme at Barclay will target students in years 3, 4 and 5 who are underachieving. The programme aims to:
- Achieve 95% attendance.
- Enable all children to meet the national expectations in reading, writing and maths within two years.
- Improve students’ attitudes to learning and build greater ownership of the curriculum.
The programme will cover a number of different subjects within a broad thematic approach, focusing on opportunities for speaking and listening within an exciting and creative context.
The funding
£150,000 over three years (£50,000 each year). To contribute towards teaching costs, resources, assistance for pupils and equipment.
