Shine on Saturday @ ABS
The grant recipient
Archbishop Sumner School (ABS) is situated in Lambeth, where levels of deprivation are very high. Last year 77% of the SHINE students were in receipt free school meals and 80% of them spoke English as an additional language. Their last Ofsted inspection rated them as an outstanding school.
The programme
SHINE on Saturdays @ ABS is run for 60 children in years 4, 5 and 6 (8-11 years old) from fourteen primary schools in the Northern area of Lambeth. The core target group is students not achieving the nationally expected level for their age.
Latest Results
2010-11 was another excellent year for results at SHINE ABS. Most of the students started the project below the expected level for both maths and English. Average progress exceeded the national expectation, so that in just one year 58% had caught up in their reading and 65% were on track in maths.
In 2011-12 Students will study a broad range of subjects falling under the topic of ‘Inventions’. This will see them learn about different inventions throughout history, write newspaper articles about them, use mathematics to solve problems thrown up by inventions, and even come up with inventions of their own!
