The Latin Programme

Critical to academic success is a strong grasp of literacy and an understanding and appreciation of language. The National Literacy Trust has found that people with good literacy skills are more likely to have greater self-esteem, better health and higher earnings. As these skills are learnt at a young age, it is important to act on this at primary level. Research has shown that learning Latin, especially from an early age, can greatly benefit not only children’s literacy skills, but also their general perception and understanding of other languages.

The grant recipient

The Latin Programme (TLP) was registered as a charity in 2008. It aims to increase the opportunities for primary school children to experience an education in the Classics. Last year TLP ran classes for 200 pupils from 4 schools in London.

What it aims to do

TLP aims to increase the literacy levels of pupils and specifically bring the whole class up to speed with the national average within two years of participating in the programme. TLP also aims to encourage greater confidence among its pupils.

How it works

TLP runs Latin classes during school time, once a week, for 34 weeks a year. The classes are taught by TLP teachers and follow the TLP curriculum. The classes include: storytelling, games, raps, conversation and critical thinking. The quality of teaching is measured by supervision sessions and evaluations from headteachers and Ofsted. Learning progress is measured by teacher feedback and literacy results from SATs tests at the end of primary.

Latest results

Achievement data is not yet available for TLP, but feedback from parents, pupils and staff involved in previous years indicates that they are enhancing learning and providing a high quality and inspired additional educational service for pupils.

Funding: £25,000 over one year (2011-2012.)
