Shine on Saturday @ Newport School

The grant recipient

Newport School is situated in Leyton in Waltham Forest. More than half the students live in overcrowded accommodation and 78% of them speak English as an additional language. The school is deeply committed to their students' academic success, whilst enriching the school curriculum with a children’s centre and a wide range of extra-curricular clubs.

The programme

Newport’s SHINE on Saturday programme will target students in years 3, 4 and 5 who need are underachieving. The programme aims to:

  • Achieve 95% attendance.
  • Improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
  • Improve the students’ attitude to learning and school life.
  • Enable more children to meet the national expectations in reading, writing and maths.

The programme will cover a number of different subjects within a broad thematic approach. In the first term the theme will be Change. Students will study changes in the environment, changes in characters in Shakespeare’s Tempest, and changing states. By embedding the core subjects into this creative, project-based curriculum, Newport hopes to engage their learners in ways which are distinctive from Monday to Friday school, and unlock their hidden potential.

The funding

£165,000 over three years (£55,000 each year). To cover teaching costs, provisions, assistance for pupils and equipment.
