SERIOUS FUN ON SATURDAY @ SHEFFIELD HIGH SCHOOL
The grant recipient
Sheffield High School for Girls is an independent day school and part of the Girls’ Day School Trust network. The school is widely recognised for its academic prowess but perhaps more importantly for SHINE it is also well known for its links with the local community. In 2010 for instance it won a national award for ‘Best Independent/Maintained School Collaboration’.
The programme
Aimed at 9 to 10 year olds, the programme is intended for both boys and girls who are underachieving, either because they come from a disadvantaged background or because they are falling behind at school.
The theme of the programme is Young Explorers, with a heavy focus on practical teaching. The sessions are designed to promote problem solving and thinking skills. Activities will be exciting and varied, ranging from film making to Dragon’s Den style challenges!
The programme will run for 11 weeks and last for 2 hours each Saturday. It will be run by staff from the High School with extra assistance from sixth form pupils.
The aim of the programme is to further pupils’ enjoyment of the core subjects by approaching them in challenging and enjoyable ways.
The funding
£19,521 over three years (2011-14). This will contribute towards transport, equipment and staffing costs.
