SHINE on Saturday @ Axis
The grant recipient

The Axis Educational Trust has over 10 years' experience running programmes in north London supporting young people who are underachieving. It provides mentoring, tutoring and supplementary support for children of all ages, has a committed team of voluntary teachers and administrators and strong links with the community.
The programme
SHINE @ Axis is for 60 children in years 4 and 5 (8-10 years old) from nine primary schools in the Tottenham area of Haringey. The project's focus is to work with children who are two national curriculum sub levels below the expected level for their age.
SHINE @ Axis is being run in close partnership with Haringey Children's Service, who are providing advisory support for recruitment, curriculum planning, monitoring and management.
Latest results

- At least three quarters of the students made the expected progress or better in literacy and numeracy
The funding
SHINE has made a grant for set up and project extension costs. Axis is contributing premises in-kind.
Funding: £262,040 to Axis Educational Trust, over six years (2006-12)
"Pupils in south Tottenham have high levels of underachievement. Reasons for this include impoverished backgrounds, English as a second language, and refugee and asylum families. SHINE on Saturdays will give them the opportunity they need to develop their learning."
