SHINE on Saturday @ Oaklands
The multi-ethnic population at Oaklands Secondary School mirrors almost exactly the population of Tower Hamlets, a London borough where poverty and deprivation are well documented. Many students are from families who are socially disadvantaged and once they move from the local primary schools they can become disengaged. Oaklands was one of the first schools in the country to deliver a comprehensive programme of study support.
The programme
SHINE @ Oaklands is for 60 underachieving students, 30 of their own students in year 7 (11-12 year olds) and 30 in year 6 (10-11 year olds) from two of their main feeder primary schools.
The project targets students who may need extra support in making a successful transition to secondary school.
Latest results
- the average literacy progress for SHINE students is similar to the whole school Year 7 cohort but the average maths progress for SHINE students is higher
- a strength of the project is the physical and emotional support offered to students as they move from primary to secondary school
The funding
SHINE has made a grant to Oaklands Secondary School for set up and running costs and we are delighted that the Lehman Brothers Foundation Europe (http://www.lehman.com/who/philanthropy/) is the partner sponsor for this programme.
Funding: £209,550 to Oaklands Secondary School, over four years (2006-09)

"We are a school which constantly reflects on our practice to find new ways to meet the needs of our students. A SHINE on Saturday programme is just such an opportunity and one which we eagerly wait to embrace."
