SHINE on Saturday @ Wendell Park

The grant recipient

The London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is the 12th most disadvantaged borough in London with nearly half of all households on an annual income of less than £10,000. Wendell Park Primary School has an established tradition of Saturday classes and of finding opportunities to extend and enrich the curriculum both within and outside the school day. The school works with a wide variety of outside agencies and attracts regular Local Authority, DCSF and other school visitors.

The programme

SHINE @ Wendell Park takes 60 underachieving students from years 4, 5 and 6 (7-11 year olds) at the school.

The project manager works with teachers, parents and students to target children who are not making appropriate progress or who might be causing concern through disengagement from learning.

Latest results

  • In Years 4 and 5 the progress made by students who attend SHINE is much better than that made by non-SHINE students. Year 6 SHINE students do better in the tests in literacy and numeracy at 11.

The funding

SHINE has made grants for set up and project extension costs. We are delighted to be funding this project in partnership with the Sofronie Foundation http://www.sofronie.org

Funding: £288,440 to Wendell Park Primary School, over seven years (2005-12)

"SHINE helps us add value. These children could never have achieved such good results without the practical learning and the extra teaching this project gives them."

SHINE Project Manager

"SHINE is like normal school but ten times better. You learn more extra for your SATS but at the same time you can have really lots of fun."

Shine Student

"SHINE is better than staying at home and watching TV."

SHINE Student

"My daughter really enjoyed being at SHINE, even more than school itself."

Parent

"Pupils will definitely benefit from being taught in a smaller setting with such a high adult to pupil ratio and I like the idea of having peer mentors from our local secondary school. This will help to forge stronger links with our primary school."
