SHINE on Saturday @ Wendell Park
The grant recipient
The London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham is the 12th most disadvantaged borough in London with nearly half of all households on an annual income of less than £10,000. Wendell Park Primary School has an established tradition of Saturday classes and of finding opportunities to extend and enrich the curriculum both within and outside the school day. The school works with a wide variety of outside agencies and attracts regular LEA, DfES and other school visitors.
The programme
SHINE @ Wendell Park takes 60 underachieving students from years 4, 5 and 6 (7-11 year olds) at the school.
The project manager works with teachers, parents and students to target children who are not making appropriate progress or who might be causing concern through disengagement from learning.
Latest results
- 93% of Year 6 students who had attended SHINE achieved Level 4/5 in both literacy and numeracy compared to 81% in literacy and 86% in numeracy for those who did not attend
The funding
SHINE has made a grant for set up and running costs.
Funding: £228,440 to Wendell Park Primary School, over four years (2005-09)

"Pupils will definitely benefit from being taught in a smaller setting with such a high adult to pupil ratio and I like the idea of having peer mentors from our local secondary school. This will help to forge stronger links with our primary school."
