The grant recipient

Latymer Upper School (LUS) is described by the Independent Schools' Inspectorate as a school which embraces academic rigour, ecourages a love of learning and the pursuit of excellence. SHINE set up the first Serious Fun on Saturdays @ St Paul's Boys' and Latymer Upper schools in 2003 and the programme continues to be delivered at LUS. Since then LUS has initiated a number of other educational support programmes for local state school students. LUS has now developed a programme to replicate the Serious Fun on Saturdays model at secondary level, starting in the Autumn term 2011.

The programme

  • for at least 30 year nine students (13-14 year olds) from secondary schools lin deprived areas in Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea
  • 10 Saturday morning sessions focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
  • students will work in small groups on projects which link science and maths with design and engineering
  • teaching sessions will be led by LUS staff, supported by interested teachers from the schools involved in the project and assisted by mentors from the sixth form
  • main aims are to develop enthusiasm in these subjects and increase the number of students opting for STEM subjects at GCSE

The funding

SHINE has made a grant for development and running costs. LUS is also providing in-kind and financial support for the programme.
