The grant recipient
Skinners’ Kent Academy and Tonbridge School are part of a small group of schools supported by the Skinners’ Livery Company. Skinners’ Kent Academy is a new, non-selective state Academy in Tunbridge Wells, which opened in 2010. Tonbridge is a boys’ boarding and day school. Established in 1553, it is independently judged to have excellent leadership, good quality teaching and high performance at all levels. The programme starts in the Autumn term 2011.
The programme
- for up to 40 year five students from local primary schools, with a focus on those who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and who are underachieving but likely to be motivated to develop their potential in science
- 10 Saturday morning sessions focusing on science taking place at Tonbridge School from September 2011
- teaching sessions will be led by staff and assisted by sixth form mentors from both schools
- the aim of the project is to encourage participation in science, stimulate scientific enquiry and enjoyment and raise standards in science in preparation for entry into Skinners’ Academy at secondary level
The funding
SHINE has made a grant for development and running costs. Tonbridge and Skinners’ Kent Academy are also providing in-kind and financial support for the programme.
