SHINE on Saturday @ Brecknock
The grant recipient

Brecknock Primary School serves an area of considerable poverty and disadvantage; most students come from the surrounding housing estates and face many barriers to learning. It has a close relationship with Holloway secondary school, which also hosts a SHINE on Saturday programme.
The programme
SHINE @ Brecknock takes 60 students who are underachieving or having behavioural problems from years 4, 5 and 6 (7-11 year olds) at the school.
This programme was described in Brecknock's latest Ofsted report as being an "exciting project, co-ordinated very effectively and providing very good opportunities for developing academic and personal skills."
Latest results
- by the end of the year, in literacy, 96% of students were working at or above the expected level for their age, and 86% in numeracy
- good attendance by Year 6 students contributed to 66% of them reaching the highest level at KS2 in both literacy and numeracy
The funding
SHINE has made grants for set up and running costs.
Funding: £247,280 to Brecknock Primary School, over four years (2004-08)
