SHINE on Saturday @ Holloway
The grant recipient

In recent years Holloway Secondary School in Islington has successfully delivered summer schemes for students transferring to the school and has also developed a thriving programme of out-of-school-hours activities for children once they are fully settled at school. It was therefore an ideal school for SHINE to work in partnership with on the development of the first SHINE on Saturday programme at secondary level.
The programme
SHINE @ Holloway works with 60 underachieving students from year 7 (11-12 year olds) at the school, to ensure smooth transition to secondary and to halt falling achievement levels. The project emphasises the benefits of peer mentoring and trains older students to mentor on Saturdays as well as sending graduate students from the programme to peer mentor primary children at another SHINE on Saturday project.
Latest results
- students who graduated from the Holloway SHINE Academy in 2005 have now taken their KS3 tests - SHINE students outperformed the school cohort by up to 30% in English, maths and science
The funding
SHINE has made grants for set up and running costs. Holloway Secondary School has been successful in securing additional trust funding for the project and the school also provides some in-kind support.
Funding: £297,781 to Holloway Secondary School, over four years (2003-07)
