Millfields Community School is a lively primary school in Hackney, where there are high levels of disadvantage and student mobility. It had been the dream of Headteacher, Dame Anna Hassan, to provide additional teaching and learning support so that more of her students might fulfil their potential. Conscious that her students only actually attend school for 195 days, just over half of the year, she worked with SHINE to create the first ever SHINE on Saturday project.

The programme

SHINE @ Millfields takes 80 underachieving students from years 4, 5 and 6 (7-11 year olds) from the school and, more recently, from neighbouring primary schools.

Following an inspection of SHINE on Saturday @ Millfields, The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) reported it to be:

"A successful and well attended school that is committed to providing a rich, varied and purposeful education... [it is] highly regarded by pupils and their parents, and deservedly so... All pupils, including those with special educational needs, make good progress and achieve well." – Ofsted Report for SHINE on Saturday @ Millfields

Latest results

  • many SHINE students consistently perform beyond their targets in all 3 core curricular subject areas
  • sustainable funding for the project has been secured from Millfields and other local participating schools' funding

The funding

SHINE has made several grants for set up and running costs and is delighted that Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) helped to fund the second and third years of the programme. Further funding and in-kind support are given by the other participating schools and by Excellence in Cities.

Funding: £316,910 to Millfields Community School, over five years (2001-06)
