SHINE on Saturday @ Hillyfield
The grant recipient

Hillyfield is situated in the Higham Hill ward of the London Borough of Waltham Forest. This is one of the poorest areas of the country. 80% of children at the school are from different ethnic backgrounds. The school has a successful track record in delivering additional out-of-school-hours projects and raising attainment. Hillyfield became an Academy in January 2011.
The programme
SHINE @ Hillyfield is for up to 70 students from years 4,5 and 6 (8-11 year olds) and targets gifted and talented children at the school who are underachieving. Core skills of literacy, numeracy, speaking and listening are developed through a varied programme, including philosophy and film-making.
Latest results
- average attendance remains very high at over 90%
- average progress amongst year 6 students was over 3 sublevels in literacy and numeracy; this is twice the expected progress
- students continue to make good progress across the year groups with over 70% making progress of 2 or more sublevels in numeracy
The funding
SHINE has made grants for set up and project extension costs. The school now makes a significant contribution towards delivery and adminstration costs.
Funding: £253,369 to Hillyfield Academy, over six years (2006-12)

"SHINE has been a huge success, so we completely threw our old curriculum out of the window and the whole school now uses a creative curriculum, inspired by SHINE."
