SHINE on Saturday @ Clapham Park

The grant recipient

Richard Atkins is the lead school in this project for a cluster of three primaries in west Lambeth. Richard Atkins is very committed to the local community and runs a variety of in and out of school projects which get high attendance from children and parents.

The programme

SHINE @ Clapham Park is for 60 students in years 4,5 and 6 (8-11 years old) from Richard Atkins, Glenbrook and Kings Avenue primary schools.

Latest results

  • half of the students made expected progress or better in literacy and numeracy; many started the year well below the expected level for their year
  • some students come from very vulnerable backgrounds including one student who was referred because she had poor literacy skills, eating problems and found it hard to socialise with others; after one year she was eating more healthily, had made friends at SHINE and was significantly better at reading and writing

The funding

SHINE has made a grant to contribute to the set up and running costs of this project and is delighted to be co-funding it in partnership with the Walcot Foundation. The schools are also providing in-kind and cash support for the programme.

Funding: £87,832 to Richard Atkins Primary School, over three years (2009-12)

"I have improved my behaviour and my listening skills."

student

"SHINE has been the most exciting experience that I have had. It has not only given me new experiences but also convinced me to take into consideration possible future careers that involve children."

peer mentor

"It was particularly clear to staff at the host school that children who attended SHINE felt that it gave them some status. We noticed that children who were very withdrawn were able to talk about the things they had done at SHINE."
