Serious Fun on Saturdays @ The American School in London

The grant recipient

The American School in Westminster, London is the only non-profit American school in the country. It provides education to over 1,000 primary and secondary students from more than 50 different countries and has strong links with the local state secondary school.

The programme

  • 16 Saturday morning sessions based around Media and the Environment and designed to make use of the school's lab and digital media facilities
  • students are taught in small groups, given challenges about environmental issues and get involved in video and radio production, web design and science investigations
  • for 30 12-14 year old students each year from across all the secondary schools in Westminster
  • targeted at those who are capable of achieving good grades at GCSE but who are not currently on track to do this
  • aiming to increase students' interest, confidence and engagement in learning, particularly in the lead up to GCSE choices

Latest results

  • teacher progress reports indicated that students made some progress in engagement, confidence and teamwork
  • student feedback on delivery was very positive

The funding

SHINE has made a grant for development and running costs. The school and Westminster Council are also providing in-kind support for the programme.
