Serious Fun on Saturdays @ City of London School for Girls

City of London School for Girls is located in London's 'Square Mile', along with some of the richest concentrations of economic business in the world but its neighbours include some of the UK's most deprived communities. Hackney and Tower Hamlets are among the most deprived boroughs in England, and Islington is among the 10% most deprived. Many of the children from these areas face significant social, economic and educational challenges.
The programme
- 10 day sessions during the year and a weekend residential course for 60 gifted students from years 8 and 9 from four secondary schools in Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets
- sessions are taught by teachers from the independent and state sectors
- it aims to develop critical thinking skills
Latest results
- 100% attendance is reported for individuals in both year groups.
- All the students rated the programme as good or better.
The funding
SHINE funded some of the running costs for this project in partnership with the Lehman Brothers Foundation Europe. Additional funding and in-kind support comes from the participating schools and other private trusts.
