SHINE's Partnerships

They say that two heads are better than one, so what better way to support our work than by helping two organisations join forces in a charity partnership?

As the following examples show, partnerships can take many different forms. Could SHINE become your company’s chosen charity this year?

The David Beckham Academy

SHINE has been the chosen charity partner of the David Beckham Academy ever since it opened its doors in 2005.

The Academy, based in Greenwich, houses two full size indoor pitches, changing rooms and state-of-the-art classrooms. In addition, its national schools programme offers children a number of exciting football-based educational activities. These also encourage healthy living and a positive attitude to sport in general.

Every year, much of the proceeds from the Academy’s European Corporate Cup are donated to SHINE. Furthermore, as a Patron of SHINE, David opens up his Academy for several days each year to students from SHINE projects, for whom the trip is always one of the highlights of their year.

“It is always tremendous to see teamwork in action and here we have two organisations working together towards a common goal – to help kids make the most of the talents they have.” David Beckham

100 Women in Hedge Funds

Most recently, SHINE was chosen as the 2009 UK Charity of the Year by 100 Women in Hedge Funds, a global association of more than 10,000 women working in the alternative investment industry.

Effie Datson, Chair of 100 Women in Hedge Funds in London, said: "It is always a difficult process to pick from many eligible beneficiaries; we believe in SHINE and are thrilled to help fund the important support SHINE gives to educational programmes. SHINE is investing in a meaningful and measurable way in the future prosperity of the UK, while bringing hope, happiness, and a sense of achievement to children that might otherwise have been left behind. The work SHINE does is vital – now more than ever.”

Founded in 2001, 100 Women in Hedge Funds provides its industry and the wider community with professional support and development, educational initiatives and philanthropy. As UK Charity of the Year, SHINE will be the beneficiary of the Association’s Annual London fundraising event. This will be held in the Locarno Suite at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 7 October 2009.

CFA Society of the UK

The CFA Society of the UK (CFA UK) is the UK’s professional body for financial analysts and investment professionals. It offers careers support to more than 7,000 members and administers FSA-approved professional qualifications, such as the Investment Management Certificate, for a further 6,000 candidates.

In 2008, CFA UK chose SHINE to be its first ever official charity and anticipates that its members will raise a total of £20,000 for SHINE in the year to June 2009. Ten members have already run the Windsor Half-Marathon as part of the SHINE on Windsor team; in addition, SHINE received a percentage of the revenue raised from the CFA Annual Dinner in September 2008.

Link

Part of the ICAP Group of companies, Link is a broking company with offices in London, New York and Hong Kong. Its clients are predominantly market counterparties or professional investors dealing in equities and fixed income products, both cash and derivatives.

Every year, Link holds a Charity Day where brokers are invited to donate 100% of commission earned that day and staff are encouraged to donate a day’s salary. In 2008, SHINE was fortunate enough to be one of the charities chosen by Link to benefit from this day: SHINE staff visited Link’s offices to explain to brokers and staff what we do, how we work and how we will use the money raised.

Watford F.C. Academy

SHINE was recently announced as the official partner charity of Watford F.C.’s new Academy and its youth teams, whose players all now carry SHINE’s logo on their shirts. Watford F.C. views its Academy as the life blood of the Club and this partnership is its latest move to ensure that the young players in its care receive the best possible combination of sports training and academic education. As Tim Ball, Watford F.C. Academy Business Manager, says: “We believe the tie up is important in terms of the boys’ social awareness.”

Plans are already underfoot to identify ways in which this exciting new partnership can benefit Watford’s young players, SHINE and the disadvantaged children we work to support.

Other Partners

SHINE also funds some projects with a number of partners, including:

"Whether kids are good at sport, or maths or science, it doesn't matter, as long as they get a chance to find out just what they're capable of. SHINE's projects give kids that chance, so I'm delighted that our partnership can make a real and lasting difference to thousands of young people."
