Serious Fun on Saturdays @ The Lady Eleanor Holles School

The grant recipient

The Lady Eleanor Holles School is a day school for girls in the London Borough of Richmond. It is judged by the Independent Schools Inspectorate to be outstanding overall and in almost all detailed aspects of the school's provision. The school has a strong network of links with other schools and the wider community via volunteer and charity projects.

The programme

  • 14 Saturday morning sessions during the year, lessons and activities run across 14 subject areas with a focus on literacy enrichment
  • for 30 girls in year 5 ( 9-10 year olds) from local state primaries in Richmond and Hounslow
  • sessions are taught by specialists and supported by sixth formers from the independent sector
  • the purpose is to develop students' literacy skills and love for learning

Latest results

  • average attendance was 92%
  • the number of students who were working below the expected level for their year group fell from 43% to 20% in literacy and from 51% to 29% in numeracy
  • 100% of parents felt that their daughter had benefitted from the programme and they would recommend it to other parents

The funding

SHINE has made a grant for set up and running costs. The school is also supporting the project in-kind.
