SHINE on Saturday @ Sebright Primary School
The grant recipient
Sebright Primary School is located in one of the most deprived areas of Hackney. There are high levels of gang violence in the area, half the students receive free school meals and nearly two thirds do not have English as their first language. The school runs a wide variety of out of school hours activities, all of which have waiting lists. In March 2010 the school received an 'outstanding' mark for their extended school programme.
The programme
SHINE @ Sebright is for 60 students in years 4, 5 and 6 (8-11 years old).
Latest results
- over 20% of students made double the expected progress in both literacy and numeracy
- progress made by students with special educational needs was particularly significant
- higher achieving children can be challenged and stretched; this has led to many obtaining level five (exceeding expected levels for their age)
- children with English as an Additional Language find the extra support very beneficial
- one student who needed an interpreter in her initial assessment made four years' progress in one year; the project manager attributes this to SHINE
The funding
SHINE has made a grant to fund set up and running costs.
Funding: £81,970 to Sebright Primary School, over three years (2011-14)

"Our children deserve the best and if we can give them another way to improve and go on to bigger and better things then we should do everything to help them get there."
Head Teacher
"I'm pleased with his levels but particularly pleased with how much better he communicates and interacts with the other children, well done Sebright."
Parent
"I feel SHINE@Sebright has made a huge difference to the attitude and behaviour of our children. All the staff have commented on how much they enjoy the atmosphere on Saturdays. Children who wouldn't normally speak to one another have formed friendships. Self-esteem has been raised which has allowed the children to be more confident learners."
