Research by The Wellcome Trust has revealed that around half of all primary teachers lack the confidence, knowledge and training to teach science effectively. Further research by the Ogden Trust highlights insufficient science education at primary school and not enough qualified teachers, despite a proven link between teacher qualifications and pupil performance.

Faced with these problems, SHINE funds programmes that give primary school children the chance to discover science for themselves. All of them aim to excite and engage children in the sciences in the hope that they will continue with these essential subjects as they progress through school.
